Opening Day of baseball season is pretty much the most exciting day of the year. It doesn't matter how crappy your favorite team is, or how much controversy the MLB is shrouded in for that given year, Opening Day is always the most exciting day of the year.

It's ridiculously fun seeing who has hit home runs on the first day and saying "He's projected for 162 homers this year!" or looking at the stats and seeing that Alex S. Gonzalez is leading the league with a .750 batting average. On top of that, Opening Day just brings back memories of all the past Opening Days, which brings back memories of all the great things about spring and summer and all the great baseball moments in general. I don't care what the calendar says, today is the first day of spring. It's a new season, a re-birth of all the beautiful things about life.

Football has surpassed baseball as America's favorite sport thanks to baseball's strike in 1994-95 and football's surge as the television ratings giant of sports. But 9 out of 10 sports fans would rather go to a baseball game than watch a football game. The aesthetic of going to the ballpark for nine innings and just relaxing, having some good food, and yelling crap in public is just too much for football to overcome. Sure, you can yell at football games, but when you heckle the ref he's not going to hear you. If you're loud enough (and believe me, I am) you can get a reaction out of the players sometimes, which just makes yelling that much more satisfying.

Since I'm getting all moist over today, I'm going to give you the top ten best things about opening day:

10. Every team has their number one starter going to the mound.
9. After opening day comes the rest of the season, a season in which every team plays baseball six days a week.'
8. The culmination of all your fantasy baseball drafts, at which point it appears you're going to win the championship by the widest of margins. That is, until your first round draft pick suffers an achilles tear on the first day of the season.
7. Sports fans can stop pretending they care about college basketball. Sure, the bracket is fun. But admit it, if it were still football season, nobody would be watching 8 games a day.
6. The ridiculous projections (mentioned above).
5. Everybody's still in the race.
4. It's spring time, finally. Time to walk around in t-shirts without jackets and breathe in some fresh air without getting ice in your lungs.
3. No matter how crappy the weather gets, it always seems like it's beautiful outside anyway.
2. It's almost expected that you skip work/school to go to a game.
1. Baseball on TV, all day long.

It's the most wonderful time of the year. As Michael Jackson once said to me, "Play ball."
